Plate Expectations: Big Bucks Realised
Enthusiasts paid a record $2.4 million at auction for 49 rare, numerical New South Wales number plates last Thursday night. Conducted by Shannons for the RTA, the auction resulted in an average sale price of $51,000.
Most expensive was the three-digit plate ‘215' which sold for $115,000. That left ‘214' feeling jilted on just $110,000 and ‘229' a pariah on only $94,000 despite being the only prime number of the three, and hence my personal favourite.
A $74,000 pink plate numbered ‘922' raised $18,500 for the McGrath Foundation.
