Roo'd Shock for Bathurst Race
The culling of about 140 kangaroos from Bathurst's Mount Panorama has angered environmental and animal rights groups. The eastern grey kangaroos were culled to reduce the risk of animal strike at next week's V8 Supercar Bathurst 1000 race.
Those opposed described the cull as "harsh", a "knee-jerk reaction", "inhumane", "unethical" and "unjustified". Kangaroos have been a problem at the race before. In 2004, one was struck and killed during the race. In 2007, one hopped between cars, narrowly cheating death - possibly an example of natural selection at work.
